He died a classic of American literature of the XX century, Gore Vidal

The American writer Gore Vidal has died aged 86 after suffering from complications of pneumonia at his home in the U.S., told the Associated Press the nephew of the writer.

The fame of the writer received by such works as "The City and the Pillar", "Lincoln," Myra Breckinridge, and the play "The most worthy."

He was one of the first in American literature portrayed in his works open homosexual characters.

Gore Vidal was a consistent critic of the U.S. political system - a country which he called a police state.

In the early 2000s, Vidal participated in demonstrations against the war in Iraq.
