Putin signs law on
criminal liability for defamation

Putin signed a law on returning to the Criminal Code article "slander,"
said the Kremlin press service on Monday.Prior to
this slander belonged to the administrative law.At the stage of discussing the bill caused a negative
reaction of some members of the journalistic community who saw the
document desire to limit freedom of speech, in particular the right to
criticize government. Putin said July 19 that it is not considered redundant
provisions of the law of criminal libel, but does not rule out the
possibility that sometime in the future they may be canceled.Criminal libel was abolished in December last year,
Dmitry Medvedev, who at that time held the post of head of state.Now, in accordance
with the law, for spreading false information discrediting honor and
dignity of another person, provides for a fine or community service."At the same time the most severe punishment to a
fine of up to 5 million rubles, or compulsory work for up to 480 hours
provided for slander, which is connected with the accusation of
committing a grave or especially grave crime," - said in a memorandum.
